In a significant step toward empowering internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Tigray region, a vocational training program in food preparation has been officially launched by HOP, a local CSO based in Tigray, Mekelle. The initiative aims to equip 40 girls and women IDPs with essential culinary skills, fostering self-reliance and enhancing livelihood opportunities. The comprehensive curriculum covers various aspects of food preparation, including hygiene, nutrition, menu planning, and cooking techniques. The training session will be led by experienced chefs and nutritionists. The training program spans six weeks, during which participants will engage in hands-on cooking practice and attend classroom sessions. Participants will receive psychosocial support and counseling to address trauma and build resilience. The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, CFLI fully covered the funding for this project. By acquiring food preparation skills, IDPs can explore income-generating opportunities, such as starting small catering businesses or working in restaurants.
